QRC celebrates biggest ever intake

Since our last newsletter we’ve celebrated our biggest ever intake with 68 new students on the roll!

Our new students, including New Zealand Winter Olympic stars Mitchey Greig and Sarah Murphy, started in April and all are now well settled into their Adventure Tourism Management and Hospitality Management diplomas.

Our young Olympians – both of whom competed at the Vancouver Olympics - are studying Adventure Tourism Management. Mitchey, a 21 year-old Kiwi, says the course is perfect because it enables her to continue training at Coronet Peak as well as learning the skills she needs to achieve her goals.

“Ultimately I want to start my own tourism business and attending QRC means I can work towards that while also training to compete in the Sochi 2014 Olympics in Russia,” she says.

Sarah Murphy, 22, who’s half Canadian and half Kiwi, competes in the biathlon which combines cross country skiing with shooting. She has a 10-year plan that includes the 2014 Olympics and ultimately running her own tourism business.

“As a full-time athlete, in the past I haven't had much time to study but the programme at QRC gives me the chance to combine my ongoing training with studies,” she says.

Our CEO Charlie Phillips believes the Adventure Tourism Diploma works well for athletes like Mitchey and Sarah… “It gives them the skills to enjoy a bright future once their competition days are over.”

All hands to the pump

It was all hands to the pump last month during recent Queenstown floods and our students were out in force to help – more than 30 of them braved terrible weather to help volunteers and business owners sandbag the worst affected areas. It was a great effort on their part so we’ve decided to count it towards the 10 hours of community service they need to do per term as part of their course requirement.

Aussie interest strong

Aussies continue to show strong interest in flying across the Tasman to study with us. Our Diploma of Adventure Tourism Management and the new Snow Sport Business Management specialisation have been particularly popular. Both the Diploma of Hospitality Management and the Diploma of Adventure Tourism Management feed directly into the final year of a Bachelor of Business degree run by one of QRC’s strategic partners, ICMS (International College of Management, Sydney).

Our International Marketing & Recruitment Manager Duncan Sadleir recently attended a number of education fairs in the Sydney region and caught up with QRC graduate and current ICMS student Adam Tomlinson who helped him out at the Northern Suburbs Expo held at Macquarie University. Adam was a recipient of both the 2008 QRC National Scholarship and a scholarship granted by ICMS.

Wine news

Bottoms up!

QRC’s wine lecturer and renowned sommelier Paul Tudgay hosted another great sellout Winemakers Series night at QRC’s Book Café last month. Whiskey expert Renee Gempton took attendees through a range of Classic Single Malts of Scotland and even managed to make her own spirit on a ‘mini still’. A fun and informative night was had by all and everybody left with a bit of a glow...

Back on the menu

QRC will once again be offering the Wines and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 Intermediate Course on 21-22 July with the exam scheduled for 27 July. The first course we ran in April received great feedback from all 11 candidates, with Agustin Novoa, the Restaurant Manager at The Rees calling it a “must-do” for anybody wanting a career in the wine and food industry.

The two-day programme is offered in the South Island exclusively by QRC.

Cheers to that

After last month’s sellout Winemaker Series we’ve received lots of requests to run another so we’re bringing it back! The next series starts on 16 June and will feature six weeks of great wines and passionate winemakers from around the country (and Australia too...maybe!). The cost is $10 per evening, or you’re welcome to come to all six for just $50. All tastings will held in QRC’s Book Café and attendees will have the opportunity to purchase wine at fantastic ‘one night only’ prices and win some unique wines. Call QRC on 03 409 0500 to secure your place.

For more wine news, tips and a chance to win the Wine of the Week, tune in to Paul’s ‘Wine Club’ radio spot on Queenstown’s More FM (99.4) every Friday at 10.30am.

Adventure Tourism diploma news

And they’re off!

Some of our Adventure Tourism Management students were so keen to get on the snow that they spent the night before the Coronet Peak season opening camped out on the mountain. Michael Pepper was on the first chair with fellow students Nic Morrison, Matt Ellis, James Hart, Nic Hawthorne and Kim Reichle (front) close behind. The six are pictured here with Spike the Kiwi.
